CURRENT STATUS
  • This agent accepts queries
  • MORE INFORMATION

    SPECIAL INTERESTS
    • We specialize in fiction for all ages of children and teens, from picturebooks through to YA.HOWEVER, please note that I do not personallyy represent debut picturebooks (though my colleague John Cusick does).
    • These kinds of stories are of special interest at the moment:
    • MIDDLE GRADE:
    • Exciting, original, adventurous action stories with appeal to both boys and girls
    • Humour that goes beyond just the gross
    • Classic, quality writing for girls with real heart and depth
    • High-concept or character-based young series with a great voice and lots of fun
    • Please note that we're unlikely to take on very short, standalone stories for this age group.
    • YOUNG ADULT:
    • Thrillers with a great concept and stylish writing
    • Contemporary romance - but again, this must have a strong concept
    • Writing that mixes genres - that does something unexpected and fresh in whatever way.
    • NB: This is just a sample of what I'm looking for - basically, I'm seeking something I've not seen before, but which also demonstrates a real grasp of writing craft.
    • I love to be surprised!
    DOES NOT REPRESENT
    • I am not currently seeking:
    • Children's non-fiction, picturebook texts, stories with a 'message', educational work, preschool/novelty products, poetry, folk tales, Christian/inspirational stories.
    • I do not represent:
    • Adult fiction or non-fiction (unless by an existing client whom I've taken on for their children's writing) - or adult-oriented work of any other kind.
    • Film scripts

    FACTS/TIDBITS
    • I'm a Brit and former London publisher of 25+ years, most of that time spent in children's publishing where I worked with authors such as Judy Blume, Meg Cabot, Philip Pullman, Gary Paulsen, Carl Hiaasen, Frank Cottrell-Boyce, Eva Ibbotson and many, many more.
    • I moved to the US in 2007 and launched the Greenhouse - a transatlantic literary agency specializing in children's and YA fiction - in Spring 2008. We immediately burst on to the scene with one of that year's major deals, and have been growing, punching above our weight, ever since. We are best known for our work with debut authors and for our nurturing and supportive atmosphere (as expressed by the agency name).
    • We have offices in the USA and London, and I work very closely with my agent colleagues John Cusick (USA) and Polly Nolan (UK). We've been very successful in exploiting authors' rights outside North America, and many of our authors have deals both sides of the Pond.
    • Additionally, our sister company Rights People sells our rights in translation around the world, giving us superb reach into international markets. In fact, our mantra is 'the world is our marketplace'!
    EDUCATION
    • University College of Wales, Aberystwyth.
    • Recent employment:
    • From 1994-2007: Macmillan Children's Books, London, where I rose from Fiction Editor to Publishing Director of the whole division.
