Algonkian Novel Workshops
The goal of Algonkian is to provide writers of all genres with the craft
skills, connections, and market knowledge they need to effectively compete
in today's fiercely competitive literary market. We provide a series of reality
checks, both in terms of written exercises and interactive sessions with professional
editors and agents. We also require every writer in our shops develop a realistic

Backspace: The Writer's Place
Backspace is an online writers organization with over 850 members in a dozen countries.
A third of our members are agented and published, and include nearly a dozen New York Times best-selling authors.
Their annual Backspace Writers Conference brings together literary agents, acquisitions editors, best-selling authors,
and publishing professionals for a two-day, two-track program of workshops, panels, and networking in the heart of the
publishing world (attendance limited to 200). The Backspace Agent-Author Day
(November 5th and 6th, 2009 in NYC) brings together over 20 top literary agents for panels and workshops provising authors an opportunity to have their query letters and opening pages critiqued by literary agents in a small-group, genre-specific format (attendance is limited).

James River Writers Conference
James River Writers’ annual Writers Conference will be held October 9-10, 2009 in Richmond, VA. Speakers include professional writers, respected editors and New York literary agents. Featured presenters will include Katherine Neville, New York Times bestselling author of The Eight, Thomas Lux, author of eleven full-length collections of poetry, and literary novelist, Michael Knight, author of Divining Rod. The popular event is cross-genre and attracts writers of all levels who write – or aspire to write in – commercial and literary fiction, romance, non-fiction, journalism, theater, memoir, graphic novel, short stories and poetry, among others. The conference is defined by its professionalism, hospitality and intimacy.
